    Garland is a family-owned and operated business in the truest sense of the word. That is because Ron and Joan Otto are personally involved in every phase of the operation, continuing a forty-year tradition.

     It all began in 1951 when Herman Otto, a German-born American businessman, built a nine-hole golf course for family, friends, and employees of the Detroit based company, Garland Manufacturing. In the early Sixties, Garland opened to the public. An additional nine holes opened in 1973 and the third and fourth nine-hole layouts opened in 1978 and 1980, respectively. Today, the total is 72 beautiful holes, all designed by Herman's son, Ron Otto.

     In 1985, a gas explosion and fire destroyed the original clubhouse. That was when Ron and Joan Otto made the decision and commitment to create the ultimate four-season recreational and corporate retreat. Since that time, they, along with son-in-law Barry Owens, General Manager, and daughter Ursula have put their personal stamp on every phase of Garland's development and operation.

     Personal service and attention to detail are what the Otto family and Garland is all about. From the immaculately manicured golf courses and cross-country ski trails, to the luxurious accommodations and exquisite dining, you are truly a guest of the Otto family when visiting Garland.

     As Ron Otto believes, "Quality and commitment to the environment are family traditions, and they will never be compromised." Guests become aware of that commitment with each visit to Garland's immaculately groomed grounds. Even Garland's Real Estate program featuring French Country Villas, condominiums, wooded lots, and single detached homes, has limited availability.

     Garland has long been known for its special Northern Michigan ambiance. Frequent glimpses of whitetail deer, wild turkey, fox, and other woodland game are all part of the Garland experience. To punctuate the Ottos' success in achieving this delicate balance between luxury and the environment, Garland is proud to be one of the few areas in the state of Michigan where nesting bald eagles can be seen.
